JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title Nurse-In-Charge
Department Nursing
Immediate Supervisor Hospital Director
ROLE SUMMARY
A Head of Department Nurse is responsible for the overall care of patients seeking treatment in outpatient and Inpatient sections. It is the responsibility of the Nurse-In-Charge to manage the team and ensure the comfort of patients before, during and after medical procedures and surgery, as well as that of patients seeking outpatient services within the facility.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Delivery
1. Oversees the development and timely implementation of nursing process to enhance quality of care.
2. Oversee infection control activities for nursing, ensuring that adequate and appropriate timely corrective measures are implemented as soon as any gaps are noted or reported.
3. Participate in informing and executing policy decisions that influence patient care services delivered in the hospital
4. Attend to all patient complaints that are unresolved at lower levels in a timely manner.
5. Oversee implementation of all nursing care guidelines and policies in the department.
6. Oversee implementation of primary nursing care in the department.
7. Work towards sustaining completed quality assurance projects in the department and integration in the departmental work plan.
8. Utilize Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems tools in timely meeting of the customer needs and assessing satisfaction.
9. Uphold good documentation practice in the department all the time.
Financing Health Care
1. Monitor and evaluate departmental adherence to the billing process on a daily basis.
2. Set, monitor and evaluate financial targets for the staff across different nursing revenue lines
3. Lead in departmental cost management activities on a daily basis.
4. Participate in nursing department budget preparation and oversee the departmental budget as required.
Health Workforce
1. Prepare training programs for the nursing staff and adhere to Ministry of Health regulations.
2. Develop ongoing education programs for Nursing staff as well as identifying their training needs.
3. Oversee provision and implementation of educational programs for nurses.
4. Provide written short and long term plans designed to implement and facilitate achievement of departments objectives.
Access to essential medicine and medical supplies
1. Evaluates orders and maintains an efficient inventory and stock control of medications/vaccines and other medical supplies and equipment.
2. Ensure Equipment functionality and maintenance in the department.
3. Monitor and support Compliance to automated order system of medication, medical and nonmedical supplies for the department.
4. Improve accuracy of inventory tracking in the department.
5. Manage stock out rates at the department.
6. Monitor nursing consumables use and avail consumption reports as required.
Leadership and Governance
1. Timely monitoring and supervision of the Nursing staff to ensure that work is done properly and efficiently.
2. Routinely monitor staff performance according to their job description and set objectives.
3. Evaluation and appraisal of staff through the company Performance Management on a monthly basis.
4. Orient new nursing staff during deployment on operations of the Nursing department and activities taking place.
5. Prepares duty roster on monthly basis in liaison with the HR Office and circulates the same on time to respective staff in the department and other concerned offices
6. Chair and ensure that monthly departmental meetings are held.
7. Ensures the clinical competency of each nurse prior to assignment of independent patient care activities.
8. Lead the team in implementation of Nursing department annual work plan.
Health Information Management
1. Oversee and support automation of departmental processes always.
2. Functionality of ICT equipment in nursing department.
3. Automate order system of medication, medical and non-medical supplies for the department.
4. Ensure continuous Completeness and accuracy of nursing data
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education:
● University degree (BSC or equivalent) in nursing OR Kenya Registered Nurse (KRN) diploma Or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) diploma.
● Certificate in Basic Life Support.
● Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is an added advantage.
● Must have a valid nursing practicing license.
Experience:
● Minimum of two years’ experience in nursing or related field.
● Experience in emergency medical services will be an added advantage.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
● Must have a strong commitment to care and compassion towards patients and a general sense of customer excellence.
● Must have good leadership and communication skills.
● Basic computer skills.
