JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title Pharmaceutical Technologist
Department Pharmacy
Immediate Supervisor Hospital Director / Hospital Operations Manager
ROLE SUMMARY
Ensure accurate dispensing, patient counselling and proper handling of pharmaceutical supplies for all orders and to provide effective pharmaceutical services to meet patient needs.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Supply and Technology
1. Identify and share timely pharmaceutical stock out reports.
2. Participate in short expiry management.
3. Document and isolate all returned drugs from wards.
4. Bill all commodities appropriately.
5. Timely selling of inventory.
6. Ensure proper utilisation of medical supplies .
7. Participate in stock take processes.
Leadership and Governance
1. Compliance to Pharmaceutical guidelines.
2. Comply and adhere to process implementation.
3. Timely renewal of individual licence.
4. Adhere to hospital policy and processes
5. Participate in Quality improvement projects
6. Participate in departmental and online meetings – zoom, Google meet, video conferences
Healthcare Service Delivery
1. Report all pharmacy accidents and incidents.
2. Accurately complete documentation and verification of all medications (including over-the-counter and complementary medications).
3. Verbally Counsel and document all patients’ information about their medicines prior to discharge.
4. Review and reconcile all discharge prescriptions prior to dispensing.
5. Ensure no Medication errors.
6. Tracking with evidence all high risk medicines.
7. Ensure adherence to work space management activities on daily basis.
8. Ensure no dispensation errors .
1. Adhere to use of Hospital management information system in all operations transactions.
2. Avail accurate raw data as required.
3. Timely delivery of processed data/ information to the user.
4. Comply with operational processes in the Hospital Management Information system.
5. Comply to automated inventory requisition process.
6. Compliance to automated order system of medication and medical supplies.
7. Ensuring completeness and accuracy of transaction data.
8. Ensure use of electronic communication channels in all stations.
9. Accurately track all inventories.
10. Appropriately work on automated inventory shortages and orders.
11. Prepare and avail departmental and individual reports as requested.
Financial
1. Optimise the allocated Budget.
2. Ensure availability of essential medical supplies through participation in drug formulary committee.
3. Dispense ordered drugs.
Healthcare Workforce
1. Attend all training as required by the governing bodies and the organisation.
2. Timely submission of individual evaluation reports.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education:
● Degree or Diploma in Pharmacy from a recognized institution.
● Registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB)
● Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK)
● Hold a valid Pharmaceutical practice licence.
Experience:
● Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
● Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical laws
● Familiarity with the Code of Ethics and Standards for Pharmacy Practice in Kenya
● Deep understanding of the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, and regulatory requirements of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
● Ability to communicate and explain treatments to patients as well as liaise and coordinate treatment with other clinical staff
● High attention to detail.
