Position Title Laboratory Technologist
Department Laboratory
Immediate Supervisor Hospital Operations Manager / Hospital director
ROLE SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for quality collection, analysis, and reporting on all tests to be carried out in the laboratory. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering quality customer service and maintaining superior patient satisfaction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Delivery:
1. Collect, prepare and manage samples and specimens including safe disposal.
2. Provision of safe blood transfusion services.
3. Preparing culture media in the laboratory department.
4. Perform tests and sample analysis in the areas of hematology, immunology, histopathology, clinical chemistry and microbiology as per each test standard operating procedure.
5. Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities both internal and external as laid down in the laboratory department.
6. Comply with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures as stipulated in the laboratory safety manual.
7. Prepare and Send samples and specimens to referral laboratories as defined in the laboratory processes.
8. Reporting all occurrences and incidents happening in the laboratory department.
9. Adhere to tests Turnaround time time as stipulated in the laboratory Turnaround time policy document.
Access to Medical Supplies
1. Maintain laboratory equipment by cleaning and ensure they are functional all the time.
2. Ordering laboratory consumables and supplies as required in the hospital HMIS
3. Participate in daily stock control and monthly stock take activities as required by laboratory policies and procedures.
4. Calibrate and do routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and machines as per established protocols, schedules, and procedures.
5. Report all stock outs to the head of department and/or procurement for immediate action.
6. Prepare and submit consumption reports as required by the head of department.
Information Management
1. Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility
2. Support automation of departmental processes
3. Check and maintain functionality of ICT equipment in the laboratory department, report any malfunctioning of ICT equipment in a timely manner.
4. Automate order system of consumables, medical and non-medical supplies for the department
5. Complete all laboratory data ensuring accuracy and validity of information.
6. Maintain all laboratory records & documents and update them accordingly
7. Ensure timely capturing of diagnostic lab results directly in the HMIS
8. Prepare timely accurate monthly health information data/ statistics extracted directly from Hospital Information System to supervisory bodies and hospital management.
Health Workforce
1. Participate in training programs on all procedures and policies in the laboratory department.
2. Participate in staff competency assessments annually.
3. With the help of the head of department, participate in preparing written short and long term plans designed to implement and facilitate achievement of departments objectives
4. Participate in performance evaluation and appraisal as required by the hospital policy on performance management.
5. Participate in professional development training and continuous medical education as planned.
6. Take roles in departmental Quality Improvement projects and deliver in key objectives set for the Project.
Leadership and Governance
1. Establish new laboratory services and products.
2. Join and participate in monthly departmental meetings.
3. Join and participate in weekly Work Improvement Team meetings.
4. Participate in implementation of Laboratory department annual work plan
5. Carry out any leadership delegated duties by the Head of department to completion with precision and accountability.
6. Resolve customer complaints in timely manner and escalate those beyond your level for more action.
7. Assist the head of department in orientation of new staff in the department.
Financing Health Care
1. Participate in timely billing of departmental services and products.
2. Work towards achieving financial targets across different laboratory revenue lines as set by the head of department.
3. Participate in departmental cost management activities
4. Participate in preparation of department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment expenditure.
5. Assist the head of department in ensuring laboratory equipment utilization rate is at optimum all the times.
6. Participate in Management of Cost: Revenue ratio in the laboratory department as advised/guided by the head of department.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education:
● A holder of a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences/Higher National Diploma in a relevant medical laboratory field or Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory from an institution accredited by KMLTTB.
● Be a registered member and hold a valid practicing license with Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board;
● Certificate in computer applications.
Experience:
● Minimum of two years’ experience as a Laboratory Technologist in a hospital setup.
● Experience in performing common laboratory tests.

● Ability to perform detailed work plans and implement these while maintaining high levels of accuracy.

● Competence in Laboratory information systems.
● Excellent interpersonal, communication & customer service skills.
● Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
● Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
● Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory testing systems and instruments.
● Ability to perform a range of clinical laboratory tests and chemical analyses on biological samples.
