JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title Anaesthetist
Department Clinical
Immediate Supervisor Hospital Director / Hospital Operations Manager
ROLE SUMMARY
The Anaesthetist is responsible for delivering high quality and efficient medical care and ensuring that ultimately quality patient care is provided to patients and clients. They will be responsible for reviewing patients pre and post operatively and administer anaesthesia to patients going for any type of surgery. They will follow highly professional standards of care to meet the needs of patients in all aspects.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Service delivery
1. Prepare anaesthesia machine and perform required safety checks as per the policy.
2. Prepare anaesthesia equipment as per the policy.
3. Prepare anaesthesia trolley and ensure all required drugs are available on the trolley.
4. Be observant of the patients during administration of anaesthesia and check the anaesthetic monitors to ensure patient safety.
5. Pre-operative review of patients going for surgery.
6. Observe peri-operative protocols.
7. Intra-operative patient monitoring and accurate documentation of anaesthetic drug administration to patients.
8. Provide emergency care to patients and observe all emergency protocols during care delivery.
9. Communicate with other professional staff to ensure that the care given to patients is of appropriate standards.
10. Maintain infection control practices and standards and be involved in the same as required by the Infection Control policy.
Leadership, compliance and governance
1. Comply to national guidelines as well as organisation policies.
2. Participate in individual performance appraisal as per departmental objectives.
3. Offer support on induction and orientation of new clinical officers’ staff.
4. Participate in monthly departmental meetings.
5. Participate in Implementation of Clinical Department annual work plan.
6. Carry out duties delegated by the Head of Department.
7. Comply to the Code of Conduct regulations .
Health supplies and technology
1. Participate in reduction in hospital medication expiries by proper prescriptions.
2. Ensure utilisation of medical equipment.
3. Assist in the compliance to an automated order system of consumables, medical and non-medical supplies for the department.
4. Ensure and maintain proper inventory tracking in the department.
5. Report and document all faulty equipment for serving and repair.
Health information
1. Ensure and Maintain accuracy and completeness of patient information.
2. Implement automated departmental processes.
3. Ensure adherence to the automated order system of medical supplies for the department.
4. Share timely accurate monthly health information data/ statistics extracted directly from Hospital Information System to supervisory bodies and hospital management.
5. Ensure reduction in patient and treatment data with typos and undefined abbreviation..
6. Document quality assurance incidents on staff, patients, visitors and others promptly and thoroughly;y and complete an incident form and write statements if required.
Health financing
1. Ensure all patient services undertaken are billed in accordance with appropriate protocols.
Health workforce
1. Participate in individual performance evaluation.
2. Participate in internal and external Continuous Medical Examination (CME) programs.
3. Participate in individual objectives formulation to the Hospital Strategic plan.
4. Participate in the Professional Development training program for the employees in the department.
5. Participate in Work Improvement Time, Infection Prevention Control and other departmental meetings.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education:
● Have a Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery-Anaesthesia from a recognized institution.
● Have a valid certificate of registration from the Clinical Officers Council
● Have a valid practising licence from the Clinical Officers Council.
● A certificate in BLS/ACLS will be an added advantage.
● Proficiency in computer applications.
Experience:
● At least 2 year practical attachment in a KNDI accredited institution.
